To grow healthy plants, flowers or vegetables the soil in which they’re planted must be able to provide the plants nutritional needs.

Material added to soil to improve plant growth and health are call soil amendments. The type of soil amendment or conditioner added depends on the soil composition, climate and types of plants to be grown. In other words you will need to have a soil test performed to understand what the soil needs in order to have a successful garden. Some soils hold too much or too little water or lack the proper nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium and conditioners, soil amendments, are used to correct the deficiencies.

To make soil less acidic lime is added. To improve soil structure gypsum is sometimes added to help release nutrients.
